The children in the Junior Room enjoyed the story of the week – The Gruffalo.
But who is this creature with terrible claws
And terrible teeth in his terrible jaws?
He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes,
And a poisonous wart at the end of his nose.
His eyes are orange, his tongue is black,
He has purple prickles all over his back.
It was a lovely afternoon so we decided to enjoy the sunshine in our outdoor classroom.
We were delighted to welcome the new West Cork Mobile Library Van to Togher N.S. It features artwork by Alice and James.
Congratulations to Alice and James. Their artwork will feature on the new West Cork Mobile Library Van.
The West Cork Mobile Library will be launched by the Mayor of County Cork, Cllr. Declan Hurley in Dunmanway tomorrow.
We can’t wait to see the new mobile library.
Cork County Library Service will run the Summer Stars Reading Adventure for children in all library branches during the months of July and August. Summer Stars is an exciting reading-based programme which is available free of charge to children across the country. Staff at our 28 branch libraries and 4 mobile libraries would love to see your pupils take part at their local library and are very happy to work with teachers and families to encourage children to continue reading over the summer. Taking part makes reading fun and helps combat the common problem of literacy loss that can happen over the summer holidays.
Each child is invited to register for the adventure at their local library; all participants will be given a Summer Stars Reading Card to record and track their own progress and a library reward stamp will be added to their reading card at the library after each book read. At the end of the adventure, all children who participate are invited to attend an award event at which they will be presented with their own Summer Stars certificate.
Our new pupil from Sweden brought letters from his classmates. Our class have been busy replying. They are delighted with their new penpals. We are learning many exciting facts about Sweden in the process. We would like to visit The Ice Hotel!
We are delighted to be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March. Over the last 20 years World Book Day has become firmly established as Ireland’s biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with an opportunity to have a book of their own.
Each child has been given a voucher to the value of €1.50 to encourage the purchase of a book.
The World Book Day Book Tokens are valid from Monday 27th February– 27th March 2017.
We were delighted to meet Marita Conlon-McKenna in Dunmanway Library today.
Marita Conlon-McKenna is an award winning Irish writer of adult and children’s fiction. Her books are enjoyed by readers across the world.
Marita’s children’s book, Under the Hawthorn Tree is set during the Great Irish Famine and has become a children’s classic. Winner of ‘The International Reading Association Award’ (U.S.A.) it is part of the acclaimed ‘Children of the Famine’ trilogy.
After her presentation there were lots of questions for Marita, in particular, was she going to write a follow-up to the Children of the Famine trilogy. Marita is thinking of writing a book about one of the characters who moves to the Wild West – so keep on eye out!
Afterwards she spend time meeting pupils and she signed books and bookmarks for us.
What has making and more importantly eating chocolate buns got to do with literacy? It just so happens that there is a story in the second class English reader called The Story of Chocolate, so obviously the children had to investigate the properties of chocolate. That’s our excuse anyway!!
