Green School Flag Award

We are delighted to announce that Togher N.S. has been awarded our first Green School Flag. This award has been the culmination of more than two years hard work by all the school. During that time we had made great progress in reducing both litter and waste in the day to day life of the school.

Our efforts involved litter picking, sorting waste into separate bins and composting our biodegradable waste. It also involved transforming what had been a somewhat neglected part of our schoolyard into a beautiful vegetable garden and outdoor classroom.

We undertook a number of hands-on analyses, i.e. what we bring to school as lunch packaging and also how much we send to landfill which could actually be recycled. We learned from guest speakers about the damage that plastic waste is causing worldwide and we investigated different solutions to this problem.

The children took part in a number of projects where they collected waste batteries for recycling, made artwork from recyclable materials, reduced paper use in the school, composted our biodegradable waste and planted and maintained the school vegetable plot.

An important step towards earning our green flag was to come up with a green code for the school: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Go Green to keep Togher clean.

A very big thanks to all in the school who got actively involved and to all the committee members who have worked so hard.

We’re all looking forward to the flag raising event which will take place on Graduation Night.
