Eclipse 2015

Pupils were very excited this morning about the eclipse. We couldn’t view the eclipse directly as it could lead to permanent eye damage. We had a live stream of the eclipse on the Whiteboard.

We created a simple Pinhole projector.
We used
2 pieces of stiff white cardboard,
A thumbtack
What to do:
1. We made a very small hole in the middle of a card using a pin.
2. With our back towards the Sun, we held one piece of paper above our shoulder allowing the Sun to shine on the paper.
3. The second sheet of paper acted as a screen. It was held at a distance so that an inverted image of the Sun is projected on it through the pinhole.
4. To make the image of the Sun larger, we moved the screen further away from the pinholed sheet.

We also made a Pinhole projector using a box
This type of pinhole projector works on the same principle as the one above, except it is much sturdier.

We did some research on eclipses and discovered that there will be a total lunar eclipse which will be visible from most of North America, South America, Europe, west Asia and parts of Africa on the 28th of September 2015.
The eclipse will last for 3 hrs and 20 mins from beginning to end. The Moon will be totally eclipsed (totality) for about 1 hr and 12 mins.
